In August, a couple volunteers from Lunch For Children flew to Nairobi, Kenya, to help DBSA, another non-profit organization that we are working to support. DBSA + LFC helps build schools for children in Kenya, specifically Mathare, a slum in the city of Nairobi. Lunch for Children helps support them with providing meals to those students as well as providing the sufficient funding for DBSA + LFC to continue doing their work.

Our volunteers visited Mathare, checking out some of the 20 schools DBSA + LFC has already built, as well as the students. All of the children in Mathare were super inviting and curious. They bombarded our volunteers with question after question, wanting to know about everything and anything. Though the children’s situations weren’t pleasant, they always had a smile plastered on their face, waving “hi” to us when we walked by, or giving us high fives.

It’s wonderful how they are so happy and cheerful all the time as in April, floods decimated the houses in Mathare. Houses were washed away by the river as well as many school buildings. The Excellence School, built by DBSA + LFC, had 90% of its campus destroyed by the flood, leaving Excellence students with only a single building. The lack of support from the government forced them to resort to setting up tents outside to have class, as they have more than 350 students. Though the number has dropped, due to the floods, students still come to school everyday to learn. 

When we visited The Excellence School, the teachers and students were very thankful for what DBSA + LFC has done for them and their community. They even had a speech dedicated to Chris, the founder of DBSA + LFC, thanking him for providing the students with healthy food and education. It was really amazing seeing the impact this organization has made in this community. One small change can really make waves.
